28 days
28 locations
28 live improvisations
with the city
28 earprints to mark
the spot
Wandering the streets of Tokyo looking for lost objects and misplaced sounds. Each day I went to a different location in Tokyo to find a place to make a recording. Listening to the sounds around me I then sang back what I heard, improvising a small tune with the city.
Sometimes the city offered me a gift – a lost or broken object that I took away to add to my treasures. I also left a token of my appreciation in the spot, a small temporary imprint of my presence, in the shape of an ear, maybe to be discovered by someone passing by encouraging them to listen, or maybe just to be blown away by the wind, dissolved by rain or eaten by birds.
This was not investigating field recording as pure material, rather I then took the fragments, and manipulated them. I used filters and effects but did not add any extra, external material – just using what was in the recording – edited and overlayed I made multi-vocal songs for a city.
In exhibition form the 28 pieces were put on 2 ipods and visitors could choose between the tracks. Two hand made books of the earprints were displayed next to the ipods.
